An artificial intelligence training program can be paid for in full, or in large part, by a public scheme or by your professional branch. There are three ways in: the CPF (your personal training credit), France Travail (if you're registered as a jobseeker), and the OPCO (the body that funds training for a company's employees). They don't serve the same profiles, don't ask for the same paperwork, and don't run on the same timelines.
What they have in common: none of them funds an unaccredited program. You need to target a certification registered with France Compétences, meaning one recognized by the state. Here you'll see which scheme matches your situation, what you'll owe out of pocket, which documents to prepare, in what order to handle the steps, and which mistakes get an application rejected. The amounts listed are those in effect at the time of writing, in September 2026.
Before You Look for Funding, Check That the Program Leads to a Certification
None of the three schemes will pay for a program that doesn't lead to a certification registered with France Compétences. That's the first filter, and it rules out the majority of online courses sold as „AI training."
Two official registries exist:
- the RNCP (the national register of professional certifications): titles and diplomas that map to an entire occupation, often long ones (several hundred hours);
- the RS (the specific register): shorter certifications focused on one precise cross-functional skill. This is where nearly all fundable AI programs sit.
To check, you don't have to take the provider's word for it: every certification has a public record on the France Compétences website, with its number, its certifying body, its assessment methods, and its expiration date. If a training provider can't give you that number, the funding application will be rejected.
At Skilzy, two certifications are registered and fundable: RS7439 (AI-assisted content marketing) and RS6792 (artificial intelligence and sales). You can look in detail at the RS7439-certified AI content marketing program before you put together any paperwork at all: target skills, assessment methods, duration.
One practical tip before launching an administrative process that will take several weeks: test the platform first. The Skilzy discovery demo gives you 7 days with no credit card, including 1 image, 1 video, 1 music track, and 10 messages generated in the built-in AI Lab. You create an account, you try it, and you know whether the way it teaches works for you. Outside of any funding, the subscription starts at €29.90 per month with no commitment.

The CPF: Your Personal Credit, Usable Without Your Employer's Approval
If you've worked in France, you have a CPF balance that can cover all or part of a certifying AI program, and you don't need anyone's permission as long as you train outside working hours.
Your personal training account fills up automatically every year:
- €500 per year, up to a cap of €5,000, for an employee working full time or at least half time;
- €800 per year, up to a cap of €8,000, for employees without a CAP- or BEP-level qualification and for AAH recipients working in an ESAT.
Your balance is visible on Mon Compte Formation, the official site run by the Caisse des dépôts. Enrollment and purchase happen there and nowhere else, and logging in requires FranceConnect+ with La Poste's Identité Numérique. That verification takes a few days the first time you go through it, so plan ahead — plenty of people discover this step on the day they want to finalize their application.
Three things to know:
- A flat co-payment stays on you for every application, roughly €100 (€102.23 in 2025, adjusted each year for inflation). You pay it by card at the time of enrollment.
- Some profiles are exempt, notably registered jobseekers and applications co-funded by an employer or by France Travail.
- Count on at least 11 business days between validating your application and the program start date. The provider has two business days to accept, and then you have a cooling-off period. If you want to start next Monday, it's too late.
If your balance doesn't cover the price, you can top it up out of pocket, ask your employer for a contribution, or approach France Travail. The full step-by-step procedure is in the dedicated article on CPF-fundable AI training.
France Travail: AIF, POEI, and Top-Ups When the CPF Isn't Enough
If you're registered with France Travail, your advisor can top up your CPF or fund the program entirely, provided the project clearly supports your return to work.
There are three routes, and you don't request them the same way.
The AIF (individual training assistance). This is the most common scheme. You pick your program, the provider draws up a quote and enters it into the Kairos system, and then your advisor reviews it. There's no automatic scale: the decision hinges on how well the program fits the career plan set out in your personalized employment access plan. Talk to your advisor about it before you start anything, never after.
A CPF top-up. When your CPF balance falls short, you can request a supplementary allocation from France Travail directly from Mon Compte Formation. The request goes to your advisor, who approves or declines it online. This route is often faster than a full AIF.
The POEI (individual operational preparation for employment). This one assumes a company has committed to hiring you once the training is done. Coverage can run up to 400 hours. If you have an interested recruiter who feels you're short on AI skills, this is the option to put on the table.
In every case, prepare a short, concrete pitch: the target role, the job postings that ask for these skills, and what the certification adds. An advisor signs off far more readily on a project with numbers attached than on a general desire to „learn about AI." If you're still at the stage of choosing a direction, the article on how to switch careers into AI in practical terms helps you frame that plan.
OPCO for Employees, Training Insurance Funds for the Self-Employed
If you're an employee, it's your employer who approaches the OPCO for their branch; if you're self-employed, you go through your training insurance fund, not an OPCO.
OPCOs (skills operators) are eleven bodies that collect and redistribute companies' training contributions by professional branch: Afdas for culture, media, and communication, Atlas for consulting and financial services, Opco EP for local businesses, Akto, Uniformation, and the rest. Your company belongs to exactly one, determined by its collective bargaining agreement.
The process is simple in principle: you ask your manager or HR to add the program to the skills development plan. The company files the application with its OPCO, which reimburses all or part of the training cost. Companies with fewer than 50 employees get enhanced coverage. In that case, you train during working hours, keep your salary, and pay nothing.
One thing to watch: most OPCOs require the application to be filed before the program starts, often at least 30 days ahead. An application sent after the first session is rejected, no discussion.
The self-employed don't fall under OPCOs but under training insurance funds, financed by the professional training contribution collected along with your URSSAF charges:
- FIFPL for liberal professions;
- AGEFICE for non-salaried company directors in commerce, industry, and services;
- FAFCEA for craftspeople;
- Afdas for artist-authors.
Each one publishes its caps and priority themes every year. Digital skills and AI have shown up on those lists almost without fail since 2024, with coverage frequently ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand euros per year.
Which Scheme Fits Your Situation: The Summary Table
The right instinct is to start from your status, not from the price of the program.
| Your situation | Primary scheme | Typical out-of-pocket cost | Timeline to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee, training outside working hours | CPF | around €100 | 11 business days minimum |
| Employee, training during working hours | OPCO via the employer | €0 | 1 to 2 months |
| Registered jobseeker | CPF + AIF or top-up | €0 in most cases | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Self-employed, liberal profession, craftsperson | Training fund (FIFPL, AGEFICE, FAFCEA, Afdas) or CPF | varies by cap | about 1 month |
| Company director treated as an employee | CPF, topped up by the company's OPCO | varies | 1 to 2 months |
| Never worked in France | Self-funded or regional assistance | full list price | varies |
These routes stack. The most common setup is to drain the CPF first, then have the employer or France Travail cover the remainder. Always ask the training provider for a detailed quote in your name: that's the document that circulates among all the funders.
The Mistakes That Get an Application Rejected
Rejections almost always come down to three causes, and all three are avoidable up front.
Filing too late. No funder pays retroactively for a program that has already begun. Count on three weeks minimum, two months for an OPCO application. Set the start date after you have an answer, never the other way around.
Choosing a non-certifying program. An excellent online course with no RS or RNCP number isn't fundable, however good it is. That's actually the main deciding factor when you compare the available options, as the comparison between Udemy, YouTube, and a dedicated platform explains.
Presenting a vague project. A France Travail advisor or an HR department reads dozens of requests. The one that gets through is the one that ties the training to an identifiable use.
„I want to learn about AI" doesn't fly. „I want to produce our campaign visuals and videos in-house — work we currently outsource for €1,200 a month — and the RS7439 certification validates those skills" does.
One last point that often gets overlooked: check that the provider is Qualiopi-certified. Without that quality certification, no public or pooled funding is possible, even with a certification listed in the registry.
Where to Start
In order: check your balance on Mon Compte Formation, activate your Identité Numérique if you haven't already, identify the certification that matches your goal, request a quote in your name, then talk to your advisor or your HR contact before enrolling in anything. And while the paperwork moves along, nothing stops you from trying the platform on the discovery demo so you show up on day one with the basics already in hand.
